January 2007
By Jane Eno
Winter has at last arrived in Rochester, NY. The temperature was only 7 degrees this morning and should struggle to reach the teens during the day. My herding practice has been cancelled until further notice due to, not so much snow, but cold. There are limits to what you want to ask a learning dog to put up with. We can’t complain about the cold though, since the entire month of December turned out to be a 2nd fall with temperatures sometimes reaching in to the low 60s.
In order to keep fit this year, I went out and purchased a treadmill. The previous job I left in May had a full gym for us to use. My new employer is much smaller, and we do not have this sort of perk. I missed my lunch time runs on the treadmill and working out with the weights. So I went to a used fitness supply store called “Play It Again Sports” and bought a refurbished treadmill. It is a wonderful thing! The whole family is using it. Our little female Shih Tzu walks on it at just under 1 mile per hour. Jessie, the Kerry, clocks a respectable 2 miles per hour with a 2% incline. Me and Tracey, the humans, run at 5 miles per hour. The machine is kept busy all evening with the various members of the household. I am hoping this will keep us much fitte, and we will have less transition to jogging outside in the spring. If you too find it hard to exercise outdoors in the winter, consider a treadmill. Both dogs, with their totally different temperaments, builds, and size, took to walking on it with little problem. I have found it helps them to have them on leash and to sit next to them and read. The Shih Tzu finds that she needs to give me the occasional kiss while walking, and Jessie, the Kerry, is very easily distracted, so he needs to be reminded of what he is doing occasionally, or he looks too far to the side and falls off.
Jann Lane has been busy getting the USKBTC Herding Committee going this winter. If anyone is interested in becoming involved, email her. The Kerry Blue Terrier is now allowed to participate in AKC herding events on a trial basis. The more activity the AKC sees, the better. So please get out there and participate with your Kerry. He/she will thank you for it!

From Joy Louise Ellwanger:
Athena, CH. Adare's the Right Answer, received her second leg in Standard Preferred with a perfect score of 100 winning first place and was 14 seconds under time at the Altoona Kennel Club Trial. She ran that course with ease so we need just one more leg for her title. It was just a one day trial and Athena's first time out since the Montgomery Terrier trial. You see, Athena has a very busy schedule between agility and Junior Showmanship competition so we juggle events and classes. Hope to enter a local trial in March.
From Jane Eno:
The first week of January turned out to be very successful for me and Jessie. We went to one agility trial for the month and got our 2nd MJP leg, out final AXP leg, and our first MXP leg. We also took home two first place ribbons and a second place ribbon. With this final AXP leg, Jessie is now: Primrose Jessie James UDX RA NA NAJ AXP AJP
