Kerries in Rescue UPDATE

See pictures of Odie and Molly

The USKBTC currently has ONE rescued Kerry Blue Terrier who are looking for homes.

ODIE
UPDATE! Odie has found a home, but Molly is still available.

Odie, a 2 1/2 year old male, is a puppy mill rescue being fostered in New Mexico. He was purchased along with Molly, whose story is below, and another female by a well-meaning person who went to look at a puppy and felt sorry for them. He contacted Rescue when he realized that he could not properly care for all three. Thank you, Rich and Linda Walts (and Rescue alumni Sammy) for picking up these dogs and driving 500+ miles round trip to meet me in Amarillo Texas!

Odie is an incredibly sweet, good-natured gentleman who is recovering well from the effects of severe neglect and is only now learning how to love and trust people. He is very reserved around strangers, but warms up quickly once he has been properly introduced. I believe this is a truly special Kerry who wants desperately to give his heart and soul to the right person! Odie is a big boy, about 21 inches tall, but very gentle and well-mannered, who loves being cuddled and petted. He was severely matted and had to be shaved down, but his stunning silver coat should stop traffic when it grows out in a few months. He would probably do best in a fairly quiet household with either a single person or a couple with no young children.

MOLLY
Molly, a 1 1/2 year old female, came from the same situation as Odie and is also being fostered in New Mexico. Like Odie, Molly was severely neglected--she was matted to the skin, had eye infections, and was infested with fleas, ticks, and worms. However being much smaller than Odie, between 16" and 17" tall, the parasites literally almost drained her dry! Molly is recovering from severe anemia in addition to all the other results of a lifetime of neglect, and is only now showing the energy and playfulness a Kerry her age should have.

In spite of everything Molly has been through, she is loves everybody and sees life as one big adventure! I discovered that Molly is starting to clear to her adult color when I shaved off her black puppy coat; her final color will be anybody's guess. She is a sweet, affectionate girl who is gentle and eager to please, but still looks and behaves like a puppy. Whoever adopts her will need to be prepared to deal with puppy antics such as mouthing, counter-surfing, stealing toys and socks, etc! Molly adores children and would no doubt love to be included as part of a busy school-age family.

If you are interested in adopting Molly, or another rescue dog, you can download a rescue application from our website at Rescue Application.

There is no charge to submit an application! We will give primary consideration to prospective adopters located within driving distance of where these dogs are being fostered. However, we get Kerries in need of new homes on a regular basis, throughout the US, so don't let that stop you from applying to adopt a dog!

Note: Josh #2, the three year old male from a shelter, was tentatively placed August 27, 2007.

USKBTC doesn't just take in Kerries and find new homes for them. Often we have the much-easier but equally satisfying opportunity to either provide advice or assistance that allows an owner to keep their dog, or we reunite a dog that would have otherwise ended up in Rescue with its breeder. The latter happened over the weekend--we were contacted about a 10 year old dog whose owners felt was no longer a good fit in their home. Thank you to Club members Floranne Etheridge for picking up the dog and caring for him in her own home while his breeder makes arrangements for his safe return, and to Lynn Duckett for being the voice of reason in convincing the owner that a breeder who cares enough about her dogs to take one back really does have the dog's best interests in mind! The breeder, who is a Club member, is thrilled and relieved to know that her dog is safe and will be coming home to her. None of us want to see a dog lose its home, but thankfully this story has a good ending for both the dog and the breeder.
